The Outlook for LED Lighting: Challenges and Opportunities
Guido van Tartwijk, General Manager Category LED Systems, Philips Lighting, The Netherlands
Abstract:
In the last decade, LED lighting has been to a large extent a continuing and growing wave of replacing conventional lighting technology by semiconductor LEDs. With the first wave being a race for performance equivalency (from a 60W A-shape bulb, to a road-lighting compliant LED luminaire), and the second being the one to offer these solutions at affordable initial cost. However, the industry’s fabric has largely been left intact: lamp-makers, ballast makers, luminaire makers, LED makers, installers, specifiers, and distributors are each seeking a new sustainable position in the value chain. Evidence is growing that a more fundamental change may be coming: the lighting market’s need for high diversity and the LED manufacturer’s drive for semiconductor economics and speed with high volume/low complexity is leading to inventory challenges across the value chain, as well as increasing spending on research & development. The presentation will discuss the need for the industry to “cross the chasm” between the low-complexity semiconductor industry and the highly diverse needs of lighting market, as well as some possible ways to address these.
Guido van Tartwijk worked in the field of semiconductor optoelectronics from 1994 through 2002 in product and process development with Philips, JDS Uniphase, and several start-up companies in USA and The Netherlands, and co-founded GenOA Netherlands. Since 2003 he has been with Philips Lighting focusing on LED lighting, and founded its LED Lighting development center in Shanghai in 2005, which is now one of Philips’ global LED hubs. He was responsible for the world-wide marketing of Philips LED retrofit lamps from 2008 through 2011, growing that category from inception to the first 60W LED replacement bulb. After a sales management role at Philips Lumileds, is currently General Manager of Philips Lighting LED Systems. Dr. Tartwijk received his MSc in Applied Physics from the University of Eindhoven, and his PhD in Theoretical Physics from the University of Amsterdam.

The Globalization of Lighting and SSL
Jan Denneman, Chairman, Global Lighting Association
Abstract:
The introduction of Solid State Lighting has changed the Lighting World dramatically. The technology changes with light velocity, new players are entering the playing field and new opportunities give rise to new initiatives. But also this causes lots of confusion. In the presentation, it will be explained what added value the Global lighting Association as a cooperation between peak national and regional Lighting Industry associations is doing to support a smooth entry of Solid State Lighting.

Samsung’s Perspective on the LED Lighting Market
Jaap Schlejen, Executive Vice President, Sales & Marketing LED Lighting, Samsung, Germany
Abstract:
The "first wave" of LED growth from 2000-2010 was driven by high-power LEDs and their use in architectural applications (color LEDs) and later in outdoor, down- and spot- lighting applications (white LEDs). Samsung believes that the "second wave" of LED lighting growth is ready to take off in this decade and is driven by advances in mid- power LEDs in the professional indoor and home lighting markets. Furthermore, this will be followed quickly by a "third wave" of LED growth, driven by intelligent lighting that integrates smart control technology in lamps and is powered by new semiconductor-driven technology.
Before Jaap Schlejen, Executive Vice President, Sales & Marketing LED Lighting joined Samsung Electronics LED in October 2011 as EVP, Sales and Marketing LED Lighting, J. Schlejen worked for 24 years in Philips Lighting (Lamps and Luminaires). He has held senior innovation positions (CMO & CTO) in R&D and sales & marketing (USA, Europe and Asia), and for the past 10 years has focused on LED. He holds a PhD in Physics from the Royal Leiden University, and throughout his career, has been schooled in marketing (for example at Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University).
